Your semester is going great so far. You just made an A on the midterm in your hardest class and you pulled in a nice pay check for all the doubles you worked this month. Sounds like someone deserves a reward. Maybe a digital camera, a PS3 or a new dress for “winter formal.” All these things sound great, but can you afford it?
Many college students have trouble with purchasing decisions because most college students don’t realize how often money comes and goes in college. Unlike people with steady full time jobs, college students usually only work part-time with much smaller paychecks. Also, a college grad with a full time job probably has monthly expenses that rarely vary from month to month. A college student, however, must plan ahead to afford the random expenses that pop up during the semester such as tuition, books, parking tickets, noise violation citations, “beer-money,” organization dues, concert tickets and eating out.
Thankfully, The book Geek Logik by Garth Sundem attempts to break down a number of every day decisions into mathematical equations. Over at www.whatsthecost.com, they offer a free “Should I buy it” calculator. I take no credit for the actual equation, but hopefully this calculator will help you make a purchase decision!
