After the introduction of the pretty photo viewer, new groups with notifications and friendship pages to replace wall-to-wall, Facebook announces the big renovation–New Profile!

As mentioned in their blog post, here are the major changes:

There are no more profile tabs. Instead, you get a navigation sidebar like the one on your Home page.

An overview is added under your name on the Wall and Info tabs. It includes a brief bio and 5 recently tagged photos of you.

Under the new category “Sports” on your Info page, you can list the sports you play and the teams and athletes you are crazy about.

Now you can tag people in the sports and activities you engage in, as well as friends you work and go to school with. All the tags will appear as a “with…” note next to the activity. These common details between you and your friends will all go to the friendship pages.

The above, however, are just the summary of what have been told on the Facebook Blog. Not to bore you, here are some other tweaks which I found equally worth mentioning:

Adding Language

You can list the languages you speak under Basic Information. They will be shown in your brief bio as “Speaks blah, blah and blah”, impressive, huh? (It would definitely look cool if you know a lot of different languages:P).

Specifying Classes and Projects

Previously under Education and Work, you can only narrow things as far as your college concentrations and work positions. But now you can even list all the classes and work projects you are (or were) involved in! And of course, you can also “with-tag” your classmates and co-workers on each of them.

More Relatives

Yet another long-awaited feature. Now under relationships you can include relatives beyond your immediate family: uncle, aunt, niece, nephew, cousin(male/female), grandson, grand… you name it.

They will all appear under your Friends on the sidebar. But instead of the modest list you got the past, your relatives now show up with their profile picture. I have to say that could be a little bit overwhelming sometimes, especially if you have a large family.

Every time Facebook launches a new profile layout, there is bound to be opposing voice. But this time, I am generally happy about it. Like the several updates I mentioned at the beginning of the post, these touches on social details are going to bring people closer together.

P.S. if you haven’t figured out the way, here’s the link to switch:P

So, Are you also positive about the new Facebook Profile, or are you going to stick with the current one until the day they make it compulsory? I’m interested to know:)

This is a guest post by Tim Willingham, a college freshmen at Texas State University. He also runs a dope music blog about song remixes, new music and music news. Make sure to check out his SXSW section.

Remember that company in the 90’s who would send you free “Frisbees” in the mail every month? Yes, I’m referring to AOL. Well, imagine that same company but instead of 4 free months you get a paycheck. Introducing Seed, AOL’s new social media experiment where you create the content behind AOL’s 80+ family of websites.

How It Works

I love to write, so I decided to give this thing a try. Once you sign up, you will see a list of available assignments. The assignment will have a title, topic, how much they will pay you and how long until the deadline.

Click on a topic to read detailed information about the assignment. Once you have found a project you feel like you can accomplish click “claim”.

Seed gives you the ability to save your assignment so you can work on it anytime before the deadline. Every time you log in Seed shows your current assignments, and also your completed ones.

After you create material for the project and submit it to Seed, there is a five to seven day waiting period after the deadline where your work is looked over. If AOL decides your work is good enough for one of their sites, they will publish it.

I actually got my second assignment purchased by Gadling. It was only a 10 dollar score, but I only spent 5 minutes writing the article. That seems like a good “profit to work ratio” to me.

Writing’s not your strong suit? Make sure to check out the “creating content” section for writing advice.

Payment

Once you get an assignment accepted, and you’re ready to be paid you must fill out the W9 for tax purposes. Make sure you know your social security number for this.

Payment at the moment is usually $20 to $50 per assignment. Although, Seed hopes that in the future there will be a “Shared Earnings” feature. This feature would enable you to split the advertising revenue off of your work.

Non-Monetary Benefits

Seed will be publishing your stories to some of the most trafficked sites on the internet. For your resume, what could be better than to say you have an article published on Engadget, or a photo published on Stylelist. Even though you may not make all of the projects you apply for, the skills you will sharpen from writing more frequently could be valuable for school and a future career.

Facebook is getting older, much older. According to facebook’s own estimates, the number of high school and college students has declined 15% and 20% respectively in a mere six months. Facebook users aged 55 and over have skyrocketed from under 1 million to nearly six million in the same time period. There are more Facebook users over 55 years old today than there are high school students using the site.

As a site that started initially for college students, this comes as a shock. Where have all the kids gone?

Anyone can go through Facebook’s self-serve advertising program and see the user demographics numbers the company estimates now. However, iStrategyLabs captured that data six months ago and saved it for comparison. The changes have been dramatic.

As you can see in the chart above, young people by age are up a small amount, but young people by school level are down. Users with undeclared education levels are way up, implying that many high school and college students may simply no longer be listing their schools at all on the site. It’s no secret that facebook is deviating from its original demographic of school aged kids, but this shows us that advertisers may be more interested in a users age group than their school level.

The chart also shows the dramatic spike in older users. This could mean totally new possibilities for advertisers, but what does it mean for us college kids? Well, unfortunately all this shows is that Grandma and Grandpa will be commenting on your status and inviting you to kill zombies with them. Keep an eye out for Grandma’s “Bunco” facebook event. I wonder if ‘guests are allowed to bring friends to this event’?
